Choosing the Correct Home Water Pump

6th September 2018 by William Naylor

Choosing the correct water pump for your home can depend on various factors, are you looking to power a single shower, multiple bathrooms or a whole house? It also depends on the type of heating and hot water system that you have in your house. First, we will briefly explain the 3 main hot water systems.

Three Main Hot Water Systems

The three main water systems used in the UK are: gravity fed systems, combination boiler systems and unvented systems.

Gravity Fed – Gravity fed systems consist of a water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder which is often placed on the top floor in an airing cupboard

Combination Boiler – Hot water is produced on demand by a small wall hung boiler, no water tank is needed to store the cold water as the boiler is fed straight from the mains water supply.

Unvented – Unvented systems use a wall hung boiler and a metal clad water tank, no cold-water tank is needed.

Where is Your Cold-Water Tank Positioned?

On gravity fed systems, the position of your water tank compared to your pipework depends whether your system is positive or negative (universal) head. This affects which water pump you will need for your home, here is a brief explanation of positive and negative head.

Positive Head – This system is designed to be gravity fed so needs a certain distance , specified by the manufacturer, between the bottom of the water tank and the water pump. Gravity pulls the water to the pump and kick-starts it to push the water through to your shower, tap, etc.

Negative Head – If your pump is situated inline or above your water thank then it is a ‘negative head’ system. The water is sucked through from the tank, through the pump and to your shower, tap, etc. This system is more common in flats.

Shower Head Size

The size of your shower head can also affect the type of pump that you will need, here is a rough guide:

Shower Head Diameter up to 5cm – 1.5 bar

Shower Head Diameter up to 5-10cm – 2.0 bar

Shower Head Diameter up to 10-12.5cm – 2.5 bar

Shower Head Diameter more than 12.5cm – 3.0 bar

How Many Appliances Will You Be Powering?

Water pumps pressure is rated in ‘bar’ 1.0 bar is equal to the pressure exerted by 10 metres of gravity fed water, the higher the number the greater the pressure. Choosing the correct pressure can depend on how many appliances you will be powering with the pump, here is a rough idea:

1.5 bar pressure – for one shower, tap or appliance

2.0 bar pressure – for two or three showers, taps or appliances or a bathroom

3.0 bar pressure – for the whole house.

Salamander Pumps have a very useful pump selector to help you pick the right pump, find it HERE >>

Wetroom Innovations Drainage Solutions

30th August 2018 by William Naylor

You shouldn’t have to compromise your perfect wetroom for a standard drainage kit, Wetroom Innovations have developed various alternatives to the standard drains used in most wetrooms including channel, wall and corner drains. This means that you can free your imagination to create the bathroom of your dreams, with it still being practical no matter what the shape or size. All the drains are designed for high flow rates, ease of installation and long-term performance. It is essential to install good quality drainage in your wetroom, by using Wetroom Innovations you know that you are using the very best on the market.

Linear/Channel Drains

If you have a larger room or communal space, then a linear/channel drain is the only effective solution as they provide adequate drainage and minimise the angles of falls. A channel drain gives the designer an opportunity to create a bespoke, individual showering space. Most of these drains are available with a range of grid designs or with an option to tile the cover for an almost invisible drainage solution.

Corner Drains

Corner drains are neatly tucked away into the corner of your shower, to give you an uninterrupted showering space, outside of the normal standing area. Two flow rate options are available for the Wetroom Innovation corner drains.

Wall Drains

If you are looking for a totally uninterrupted bathroom floor, then a wall drain is the solution for you. The gulley remains fully accessible via the vertical flush mounted cover plate. One of the main appeals of a wetroom is their spacious, seamless finish. The drain in a wetroom is one of the only visible elements, so using a wall drain creates a sleek and clever drainage system. There are 4 finished available for these wall drains: Brushed Stainless Steel, Chrome, White, or a bespoke drain cover that can be fashioned from a tile of your choice (tile insert)

Benefits of a Filtered Water Tap

9th August 2018 by William Naylor

Filtered water taps are quickly becoming a standard feature in most modern kitchens. With the ability to transform standard tap water into clean, filtered drinking water due to their high-performance filters. These filters remove chlorine and dissolved metals, as well as reducing the levels of calcium in the water, improving the taste and prolonging the life of kettles and steam irons.

As the filtered water cannot be distinguished from bottled mineral water, the cost savings can be huge, as there is no longer a need to purchase bottled water from the supermarket. This also then leads to a reduction in waste and helps the environment as it avoids the disposal of endless plastic bottles.

Filtered water taps work by having two independent waterways, once for filtered water and one for unfiltered water. Special hoses ensure that once the water has been filtered, it can never come into contact with anything that can affect its taste. Therefore, ensuring that you have pure, fresh tasting water each and every time that you use the tap.

We supply filtered water taps from brands such as: Grohe, Abode & Clearwater

Current Bathroom Trends from Dansani

2nd August 2018 by William Naylor

When you choose and fit a new bathroom, you have settled on something that you wish to live with for many years. But this does not mean that you cannot adjust your bathroom with the ever-changing bathroom trends in the homeware and interior industry. Dansani offer a timeless design that can be updated to always fit the current bathroom trends. Dansani take inspiration for their different ranges from all corners of the world as well current styles in various interior and exterior trends, here are just a few.

Nordic Cool

Whether it is in the food, fashion or design industry, Nordic countries are all the rage at the moment with their light, timeless expression integrated with perfect functionality. The focus is on craftsmanship to keep that human touch rather than making way to technology in an ever-evolving tech savvy world. Natural tones and soft, indirect lighting are used across the Dansani range to portray the Nordic tones and beauty.

Wood & Structure

Another big part of Nordic culture is using visible wooden elements in various tones. Of late bathrooms trends have slowly been turning more sterile with white, grey and black tones. Dansani bring back that natural look in their furniture with wood taking back the centre stage, giving your bathroom a light textured feel.

Varied Play of Colours

Following on from the lack of colour in current bathroom design, Dansani are trying to re-instate the idea of having colour in your bathroom. By using subtle pastel tones set of with contrasting brassware fittings your bathroom can move away from the standard white, grey and black tones. These natural pastel colours can be used in cool or warm tones to bring that touch of personality to your bathroom without being brash.

Metallic Surfaces

The bathroom industry is moving away from the idea that surfaces and fittings need to conform to a colour scheme of stainless steel, chromes or brass finishes. More and more frequently we are seeing painted metal appear, with mainly matt black and white finishes. These colours can be used to bring a retro or industrial feel to the bathroom and can really set off wooden or gloss cabinets and ceramics.

Be daring and bring a splash of colour to your bathroom 🎨 pastel tones are really in right now, what do you think of this pastel pink bathroom set off with brass fittings by @dansanibathrooms ? 👍🏻👎🏻
